Toldos: The Mundane and the Sublime. Food and Spirituality

There is a well known theme in the mefarshim that teaches that eating can be a spiritual experience.  While the mefarshim talk about how the act of eating can be spiritual, there is an additional concept that deserves discussion, and that is how one acts after he has eaten.  In our Parsha, two pivotal events occur- the sale of the birthright, and the blessings given by Yitzchak.  In both, food plays a role, but in diametrically different ways.  These stories illustrate the second theme.

First, here is a group of examples of the generally known concept (that are better left untranslated.)  The idea is that the Torah teaches us that a physical pleasure, eating, can be done in a manner that is a service of Hashem.  The eating itself is spiritual, and the physical enjoyment is a means of enhancing our spirituality.  This concept is unique to those whose lives are formed by the teachings of the Torah.

Rav Sorotzkin in Aznaim LeTorah Vayikra 1:3.

Rav Yosef Engel in Gilyonei Hashas Beitza 16a:

Kli Chemda at the end of Vayeira:

And, of course, Pesachim 68a, and I'm bewildered as to why nobody shtells it tzu, because it's a perfect tzushtell:

All the above deal with the manner of eating: there is a manner and a frame of mind while eating that makes it a lofty spiritual experience.  Despite the fact that eating by its very nature is an animalistic act to which one is is driven by physical necessity and desire, it can be done in a refined and spiritual manner that imbues the act with a spiritual quality.  As the Lutzker Rov put it, one who eats in service of Hashem, מרגיש בבשר ההוא טעם אחר לגמרי, he senses in that meat an entirely different flavor, the flavor of spirituality.  (I must add that I believe that no two of them are saying the same thing.  There are many ways to understand the underlying concept, and while they all might say the same words, I know for a fact that Rav Eliahu Dessler and a Lubavitcher and a Breslever and a Chaim Berliner would have thoroughly disparate interpretations.  Here's the classic example, from Rav Dessler, Vol II page 116:

What our parsha adds is that after one has eaten, there are two ways to react to a full stomach.  Even where the אכילה גופה was not a מעשה מצווה, where the eating itself was not inherently a mitzvah, there are two entirely different ways of processing the gratification and contentment that follows a satisfying meal.

One is to become more gashmiusdik.  That is the path that leads to עזות and  חוצפה, to stupor and obliviousness, to שמנת עבית כשית.  The other is to channel and sublimate that satisfaction into an elevated spirituality.  This leads to עדינות and רחמים, to stronger empathy, heightened spirituality, to ואכלת ושבעת וברכת את ה' אלוקיך, to renewed vigor in Avodas Hashem.  Eisav's behavior illustrates the first type, and Yitzchak's the second.

See, for example, Rabbeinu Bachay here (27:4).
The natural consequence of  גשמיות is התגשמות.  But with the proper frame of mind,  גשמיות can also be  מעורר רוחניות.

  1. Apropos the theme that eating can lift you to a spiritual high, I got the following a novel recipe for Cholent in a letter.

NEW YORK (JTA) -- Now that the states of Colorado and Washington have legalized the recreational use and commercial sale of marijuana for its residents 21 years or older, there are all sorts of ways to get creative in incorporating the new legal substance with Jewish edibles. Here's a recipe for Happy Chulent that one seasoned "cook" shared with the JTA -- he guarantees it will uplift your Shabbat spirits.

    HAPPY CHULENT
    Ingredients:
    3 1/2 grams dried marijuana
    1/2 cup olive oil
    1 onion
    3 cloves fresh garlic
    3 potatoes
    2 sweet potatoes
    1 cup barley
    1 can baked beans
    2 teaspoons salt
    1 tablespoon paprika
    3 tablespoons Frank's hot sauce
    1/4 cup ketchup
    1 piece flanken with bones
    2 cups water

    Preparation:
    Heat oil over low flame.
Grind marijuana by sprinkling with hand or by using grinder.
Add to oil, keep on low flame for 20 minutes or until weed turns light brown.
Pour content through sifter, throw out weed residue, and pour oil into bottom of crock pot, put on high high setting.
Saute onion into oil, add rest of ingredients, cook on low setting overnight.
    Serves 8-10;
Side effects will take 20-30 minutes to kick in if served hot.

  2. My New Hashkafah of Shidduchim :-)

My new hashkafah of shidduchim is thanking and praising HASHEM always :-)

Even when my dating experiences are far from pleasant, I realize that HASHEM is guiding my life with His infinite wisdom and abundant love, and exact precision that only He is capable of :-)

HASHEM always knows what is truly good for me, even when I do not :-)

Often what I need most is atonement and humility, so G_d gives me those precious things through unpleasant dating experiences :-)

I now realize that I must always thank HASHEM for ALL of my dating experiences, because even the worst dates are for my eternal benefit, because they provide me with precious atonement and humility :-)

Tractate Avot teaches that the reward for a good deed is proportionate to its difficulty; by giving me difficult dating experiences, HASHEM is providing me with greater reward for Olam HaBa, in addition to precious atonement and humility :-)

G_d loves me even more than I love myself, and He would never give me an unpleasant dating experience unless it was for my eternal benefit in both Olam HaZeh and Olam HaBa :-)

    THANK YOU HASHEM!!!!

Thank you for all my dating experiences, whether pleasant or unpleasant or mediocre :-)
You are always guiding me with endless wisdom and love; You always help me and give me everything I need :-)

    I regret all the times I complained;
instead of complaining, I should have been busy thanking You.
    THANK YOU HASHEM!!!!
