Korban Pesach, Korban Todah, Matza and Chametz

The Rosh in Arvei Pesachim (30) says that the minhag in France and Germany was to use an Issaron measure for the three matzos we use at the seder.  This is because in commemorating the Exodus, we see ourselves as if we were released from prison, and one who is released from prison must bring a Korban Todah. The Korban Todah comprised forty loaves, thirty of which were ten each of three types of Matza and ten were Chametz. The Mishna in Menachos 77a says that the volume of flour for each of the Matza varieties was "three Issaron and a third." If the ten pieces made from that measure totaled three and one third Issaron, then each piece was .33, and three pieces totaled one Issaron.  Therefore, we are noheig that the three matzos at the seder total one Issaron, just like three pieces from the Korban Todah totaled one Issaron.

(An Issaron is one tenth of an Eiphah, and is therefore 7.2 Log. It is the same shiur as the mitzva of Hafrashas Challah, which we generally assume to be five pounds.  For the purpose of this post, assuming that a revi'is of a log is 3.3 oz, then an Issaron would be 95 ounces, or three quarts. That means that each Matza would be made of 32 ounces of flour, or four cups. If you go by our hanhaga by Hafrashas Challah, then you would have each matza weighing more than one and a half pounds.  Whether it's made with four cups of flour, or it weighs 1.5 pounds, that's an enormous matza. I think we can safely say that we don't follow this minhag any more.)

The Tur, the Beis Yosef, and the Rama in 475 all bring this lehalacha. The Rama says

The Mordcheh in Arvei Pesachim also compares the seder to the Korban Todah, but he uses it differently. He says that although the three varieties of Matza that accompany the Todah should be made as ten pieces each, if necessary, they can be made into three pieces, one for each variety. Since the Todah needs an accompaniment of a minimum of three matzos, we reflect that by having three matzos at the Seder. This is also in the Shiltei Hagiborim in AP in the name of the Smag.

It comes out that the Rosh says we use three matzos because we need one broken one and two for Lechem Mishneh, but the Mordechai says that the idea of three matzos is to reflect the Korban Todah.  Both are saying that the Matzos need to express the idea of Lachmei Todah. The Rosh says that this is done by their total volume - making the three a volume of one Issaron, and the Mordechai says that this is done by their number - having three matzos at the seder.

One thing is clear. That the Matzos we have at the Seder should reflect the idea of the Korban Todah by some similarity to the Matzos that accompany the Korban Todah.

So if the Korban Todah is so prominent in our Zecher of Yetzias Mitzrayim, and after all, we did leave a prison, which always creates a chiyuv of Korban Todah, why not do it properly, including the Chametz?

This is how the Abarbanel interprets the question of the Mah Nishtaneh. Why do we eat only Matza, if the Korban Todah included both Chametz and Matzah.

Additionally, the Seforno.
The Seforno in Shemos 12:26-27 explains the question and answer of the son as follows. (In the Hagada, we attribute this particular question to the wicked son, but that's not what the Seforno is doing.)
1. the Korban should be on the Yomtov, not before it begins.
2.  the Korban should be between the Temidim, not after the evening Tamid.
3.  only one Korban for Yomtov should be brought by the Tzibur, not everyone bringing his own.
I've separated the three questions and three answers so that what he is doing is more clear.
Answer, in the next passuk-

I think his third answer, that it is brought by yechidim instead of the Tzibur, is reminiscent of the Abudraham that says that we don't rely on the Shaliach Tzibur to say Modim, because Modim, expressing appreciation, cannot be done through an agent. You have to do it yourself.
So this Seforno also sees the Korban Pesach as a form of Korban Todah.

The Chasam Sofer in Toras Moshe Parshas Emor says that the Korban Pesach and the Shtei HaLechem of Shavuos are really two parts of the same korban, both, in sum, creating a Korban Todah, with the Matza on Pesach and the Chametz on Shavuos.

Why, then, this bifurcation? The Ramban says that Matzah alludes to Rachamim and Chametz to Din. Our redemption from Mitzrayim was a manifestation of Rachamim, while Shavuos involves Din, the strict obligations of the Torah.  I don't really understand that Ramban, but Reb Chaim B has a piece on this here, which was the catalyst for this post.

The Chasam Sofer also has two other answers, that Pesach is a celebration of the opportunities of the future, and that the shibud and geula were needed to cleanse us of the lichluch of being from Aramim, so it's more like the korban of Miluim, which was basically a Todah, in that it had all the types of Matza -  חלות ורקיקין ורבוכה - but did not have Chametz.

Forgive me, but I have a simple answer. Yes, the Pesach is like a Korban Todah, and so it should include Chametz. But it's Pesach. You can't have Chametz on Pesach.

Your reaction should be that this is circular reasoning and a foolish answer. But ask yourself, if we didn't have the question about the Todah aspect of Pesach, you would not ask "Why is Chametz assur on Pesach." We know innumerable answers to that question. Well, now that Pesach fodders that Chametz is assur, it doesn't matter that the korban should be like a Todah, it can't include Chametz. The din of Haggada, and lir'os atzmo, requires that we do it on that date mamesh, and so Chametz is out of the picture. Adderaba, it could be that this is why we separate it into Matza on Pesach and Chametz on Shavuos, as the Chasam Sofer / Ramban say.

This connection between the Todah and the Pesach also explains another commonality, that the time they must be eaten is far shorter than most korbanos in their category.  The Abarbanel and the Seforno and the Netziv say that the reason the time for a Todah is shorter than that of a Shelamim, and there is so much bread to eat, is so that you will invite a large number of people and you will all eat together, so that the baal simcha will have a large and festive audience of friends to whom to tell his or her story of salvation - Pirsumei Nissa. This is exactly the case with the Pesach, whose time restriction is even greater - from Tzeis to midnight.

The idea that the Torah wants Pirsumei Nissa in the Korban Pesach is mentioned in the Yotzer for Shabbos Hagadol, thank you to Rav Avrohom Wagner and Baruch Hashem there are still people who not only say the Yotzros but who also care what they mean -

In a new peirush on the Yotzros called Higayon Yitzchak (any he'aros on this peirush should be directed to the authors, Kolel Demasak Eliazar (sic), 712 Wythe Street in Brooklyn, 718-422-7566.) we find

and in his notes he says two pshatim from a talmid of Rashi in a ksav yad

so the Yotzer clearly is saying that there's an idea of Rov Om in the din Tachosu of the Korban Pesach.

Again from Rav Avrohom Wagner - the Targum Yonasan in Shemos 12:4 says
which might mean that you don't shecht the Pesach if you have fewer than ten menuyim - but he might also mean that since you have to be wary of leaving over the meat, you'd better have at least ten people so nothing's left over, unless you invited יוחנן בן נדבאי, or my brother.  That explains why he says Reb Chaim Kanievsky says that it is reminiscent of Pesachim 64b and might mean the same thing, that this is a matter of practicality that arises from the time constraint, not a halachic numerical requirement.

If that's what the Targum Yonasan means, it's very much like the Sifri (Devarim 132) brought in Pesachim 91a that says
meaning that Reb Yehuda holds that it is assur to shecht for one person, but two would be muttar (as is clear in Pesachim 98-99, where it says א"ר יוחנן אפילו תימא רבי יהודה כיון דאמר רבי יהודה אין שוחטין את הפסח על היחיד מעיקרא לאמנויי אחרינא בהדיה קאי, "achrina" meaning one other person,) while Reb Yossi holds that all that matters is ensuring that nothing is left over, and if one person can manage, kol hakavod.
While the TYBU is in any case a daas yachid mamash, the possible connection is interesting.

This desire to have a large crowd is reflected in the opening words of the Seder, when we make it clear that guests, who are always welcome on Yomtov, are especially valued on Pesach.

  1. Re: having a crowd for the korban Pesach, note R' Yehuda's shittah that See, too, the Targum Yonasan on the possuk ואם ימעט הבית מהיות משה where he seems to require a minyan for eating the korban (Compare chalitzah בעשרה כי היכי דליפרסמא מילתא).

    2. There's a sefer called נער יונתן that was published about 8 years ago. This is what he writes on the relevant Targum:

In the השמטות, after bringing a few more sources, he points out that this cannot possibly be Rabbi Yehuda's shittah, since from the sugya in Pesochim 98-99 (cf. Rambam 3:8 and Mahari Korkus) it become clear that R"Y would allow shechitas korban Pesach even for two people.

To his point of ribbui ochlin as a function of pirsumei nisa, I would add the Yotzer leParshas haChodesh (Shacharis):
