Anyways, the Chazon Ish (YD 61) is מחדש that an AZ that doesn't have any worshipers, is considered בטל even though there was no action to make it בטל. He doesn't really say straight out that if all its worshipers died, then it is ממילא בטל. So we don't have to destroy everything at the Israel Museum. I wouldn't have known the Sifri, which the Rambam quotes in his Sefer HaMitzvos, to the effect that Yes, I'm aware of the Sifri that the Rambam is based on, which, in the other system, is in piska 8, without your citation.

By the way, the Sifri in 59 there says that the mitzva does apply outside of Eretz Yisrael, as the Gemara in Kiddushin says (verbatim.) In any case, the Netziv in Haamek She'eilah 52:3, on Yisro, explains that the Sifri is actually saying that it's a machlokes. But the point of my post was to discuss whether the halacha applies in our times. The answer is yes, it does, in and out of the land. Besides the fact that the Tur doesn't pasken like the Rambam, even the Rambam agrees that the basic mitzva applies outside of the land. Nobody paskens like the Ramban.Eliezer Eisenberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16036989084122930226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6453787673476195995.post-82636872677162730982016-09-02T04:36:52.148-05:002016-09-02T04:36:52.148-05:00About active search and destruction of As in hutzl...About active search and destruction of As in hutzlaartez- before you analyze the rishonim, I suggest you start with the midrash tannaim. In Sifri its unrefuted stamma tannaim:

This is why the bracha upon seeing destrouyed house of AZ is:

Dr. Ezra Chwathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10179336102318509122noreply@blogger.com
