My son, Mordechai, often speaks about the difference between kibush, as you say, and conversion, or what they call channeling or redirection, as per Rav Chanina is Shabbos 156a. He says that this was the problem with Eliezer eved Avraham.

What you're saying sounds exactly like what Rav Kook says, other than the change to comprehensible. וכן יכבשו רחמיך, במרום עזם, את כעסך מעלינו, שיתעלה כח קדוש זה למקור תפארתוEliezer Eisenberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16036989084122930226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6453787673476195995.post-90310708969316825252016-11-14T09:07:40.173-06:002016-11-14T09:07:40.173-06:00At the beginning of the closing portion of Or Yisr...At the beginning of the closing portion of Or Yisrael letter #30, R Yisrael Salanter distinguishes between kibbush hayeitzer and tiqun hayeitzer. Kibbush hayeitzer is acting despite the desire. The desire is still there, but overcome. Tiqun hayeitzer is where the desire is actually fixed -- desire is in line with Hashem's design for us.

Rashi writes about nehfikha lemidas rachamim, but the siddur / machzor speaks of kibush.

Perhaps the prayer is more like "Just as Avraham Avinu repressed and overcame his quality of mercy to do Your Will -- ie to find the right synthesis of Rachamim and Din, so too ..." After all, the Rambam describes His Will as our following the middah habeinonis, not as choosing one to the exclusion of the other.

Just thinking out loud.micha bergerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11612144735431285113noreply@blogger.com
