Rosh Hashanna- Like a Pomegranate

One of the famous Simanim is the pomegranate, upon which we say "May we be full of Zechuyos like a pomegranate," as brought by the Rama (583:1) The minhag to use a pomegranate predates Rav Hai Gaon. The problem is that the Gemara in several places (e.g. Sanhedrin 37a) says that even those Jews that are relatively "empty" of mitzvos have as many mitzvos as a pomegranate. So what are we asking for?

Gemara in Sanhedrin

(I am aware that the Gemara in Megilla 6a says this applies only to the town of Tveria- אלא אמר (רבה) חמת זו חמי גרר רקת זו טבריא כינרת זו גינוסר ולמה נקרא שמה רקת שאפילו ריקנין שבה מלאין מצות כרמון- but I am asking from the Gemara in Sanhedrin, and the similar Gemara in Brachos.)

This is not an earth shattering question. It's just a siman, and it means what you want it to mean. But the Pri Chadash does ask the question (OC 583:1,) so it deserves a nice answer. The Pri Chadash answers that the empty people accumulate that number in a lifetime, but we're asking to have that many in the coming year.  There are, of course, innumerable answers to this question,  Here are some of that I'm aware of.  They're all fine, but they're too sincere for me, and I would appreciate it if a baal kishron somewhere could come up with something geshmack. Until then, you can skip the pomegranate and use a kiwi, which has far more seeds than a pomegranate.

1. The Pri Chadash's answer, as above, and quoted in the next paragraph.
2. The Matteh Yehuda vol II siman 583:1
3. From ר' דוד נג'אר, brought in the מגדנות נתן - that the empty ones are like a Pelech of a pomegranate (פלח הרמון רקתך), which is one section. We, on the other hand, want to be as full of mitzvos as a whole pomegranate.
4. Someone suggested that in the old days, even the simplest Jew was full of mitzvos, but now, in our deteriorated condition, we can only aspire to something that was common in the old days. I don't like this answer. Jews are Jews, old days or nowadays.

- An anonymous comment directs us to something the Lubavitcher Rebbe said here.  The relevant section is

Both the apple and the pomegranate are representative of the Jewish people. The Torah likens Israel to an apple (“Like an apple among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved”—Song of Songs 2:2) as well as to a pomegranate (“Your lips are like a thread of scarlet, and your mouth is comely; your temple is like a piece of pomegranate within your locks”—ibid. 4:3). But while the apple represents Israel in a virtuous state, the pomegranate refers to the “hollow” or “empty ones amongst you.” As interpreted by the Talmud, the verse “your temple is like a piece of pomegranate” comes to say that “even the empty ones amongst you are full of good deeds as a pomegranate [is full of seeds].” (Rakah, the Hebrew word used by the verse for “temple,” is related to the word reik, “empty.” Thus, “your temple” is homiletically rendered “the empty ones amongst you.”)
The pomegranate is more than a model of something that contains many particulars. On a deeper level, this metaphor also addresses the paradox of how an individual may be “empty” and, at the same time, be “full of good deeds as a pomegranate.”
The pomegranate is a highly “compartmentalized” fruit. Each of its hundreds of seeds is wrapped in its own sac of flesh, and is separated from its fellows by a tough membrane. In the same way, it is possible for a person to do good deeds—many good deeds—and yet they remain isolated acts, with little or no effect on his nature and character. So, unlike the “apple,” whose deliciousness is from core to skin, the “pomegranate” contains many virtues, but they do not become him. He may be full of good deeds, yet he remains morally and spiritually hollow.
This explains the connection between the pomegranates and the bells on the hem of the priestly robe. As explained above, the noisy bells represent the imperfect individual who is striving to transcend his deficient state. Although he is still a spiritual pauper, he refuses to act like one—hence the noisy friction that characterizes his life.
Beautiful Noise
To become an apple, one must first be a pomegranate.....

With this approach, I think we have a geshmakkeh answer. Yes, even the simplest Jew is as full of mitzvos as a pomegranate. The problem is that he doesn't allow his good deeds to change who he is on the deepest level- in a sense, we could say that he doesn't allow his Mitzvos, an external act of obedience, to become Zechuyos, something that changes who he is inside, that makes him into a tzadik. This explains why the Gemara in Brachos says the common man is full of Mitzvos, but the nusach of our yehi ratzon is to be full of Zechuyos.  So step one, being full of good deeds, is a good aspiration for all Jews, commoner and leader alike.  But what we are asking for is not only to be full of mitzvos, which, because Klal Yisrael is a holy people, is not uncommon.  We are asking for much more!  We are asking that we be full of zechuyos, that our good deeds should go deep inside our souls and make us into different people.

For a learned discussion on this topic, see here, which I'm reproducing below: Please note that it turns out that Rav Wolbe said exactly what we said here.

    1. That's really funny, in light of the Chasam Sofer in his Drashos, volume II, page 249 columns 3 and 4, who says
that the sweet part, the aril, symbolizes Torah scholarship, while the tasteless but still useful white seed symbolizes those that have no Torah but do mitzvos.
Here's the Chasam Sofer, beginning at the end of the first column.

So what are we going to do with this new "seedless pomegranate?" But the truth is that as I understand it, it does have seeds, just that the seeds are soft and edible, so it's not a problem.

  2. On Rosh Hashana we eat apples and we eat pomegranates. The me'il of the kohein gadol had pomegranates at the bottom. Rashi say the pomegranates aere between the bells. Ramban disagrees and says the pomegranates were inside the bells. He further states that according to Rashi's approach, the fruit on the hem should have been apples, not pomeganates. Why? The Lubavitcher Rebbe suggested a very beautiful explanation, which, I think you will agree, will add to your geshmak when partaking of the apple and of the pomegranate this Rosh Hashana. Here is a link to an article that is based on the Rebbe's explanation: http://m.chabad.org/parshah/article_cdo/aid/1169/jewish/Noise.htm

  3. For those who don't have time to click on a link or read a long article, the basic gist of it is that the seeds of a pomegranate are compartmentalized within the fruit, and are separate to the fruit itself. In contrast, the apple is one fruit, and the whole thing is edible. So the pomegranate represents a Jew who does mitzvos but struggles to transform his essential character; while the apple-Jew is the tzaddik whose mitzvos are one with him and does not need to struggle with his character. While the pomegranate is a lower spiritual level, it has one advantage, which is that this type of Jew is struggling, he is fighting to grow. So on RH, we wish this attribute for ourselves too, that we should always continue struggling to grow, never become satisfied with status quo.

    1. Thank you for the link! So the pomegranate can be seen as symbolizing the man who "may be full of good deeds, yet he remains morally and spiritually hollow." because he doesn't allow his good deeds to effect a spiritual change in his identity and character. If so, we hope to do many good deeds, and eventually allow them to make us into "an apple," whose good deeds bespeak his innermost reality. Very nice! Reminiscent of the Chasam Sofer that I mentioned in a previous comment, too!

  4. The more basic question is how can you ask Hashem to give you the zechuyos of a rimon, a kiwi, or anything else -- if you do good deeds, then you have the zechuyos without asking; if you don't do good deeds, then the siman is not going to help. (from Chaim)

    1. Oy, you litvak.... you are ignoring the deep, deep, kabbalistic secrets of life. Also, it's just a nice thing to do, Simna milsa, that the ribono shel olam should present us the opportunity to do mitzvos, and surround us with friends that encourage us to do them, as we say every day after birkos hashachar.

  5. Rav Wolbe in his sefer on Elul/Yemei Ratzon is troubled by a similar question. He says the metaphor of the pomegrante is imperfect: if rekanim are meleim mitzvos k'rimon, what's left for tzadikkim? A pomegranate can't be further expanded once it's full!?

He answers the difference is in the quality of the arils themselves. An "empty" Jew is full of mitzvos, but only does the mitzvos that are circumstantial and easy to perform. A "full" Jew, if you will, operates with mesiros nefesh for mitzvos, and performs them even through great resistance. The mesiros nefesh and overcoming of the yetzer hara and seperatess a juicy red aril from a withered or tart one.

Thank you for the post, the Lubavitcher Rebbe's pshat is beautiful !!

    1. Wonderful. Thank you! From what I've heard, Rav Wolbe was an ehrliche yid.
It reminds me of something I heard from Rav Galinsky once. He asked a friend, "I was wondering, 'Ploni', as everyone knows, is a tremendous baal gaivah. When he says "נפשי כעפר לכל תהיה", what can he possibly have in mind? He certainly doesn't really hope that to be like afar! He answered, "Ah, it's pashut. Do you think he's thinking about the afar in the Negev? He's thinking about the afar in the middle of Tel Aviv. The afar in middle of Tel Aviv, one square inch is worth a fortune!!!" (Actually, when I heard this, he said "like the afar in Bnei Brak...." because at that time, Bnei Brak was cheap. It wouldn't make sense that way any more, though.)
So Rav Wolbe's pshat is, yes, we pray that we be like a pomegranate. But not like just any schmendrik pomegranate. We are thinking of SUCH A POMEGRANATE!!
