Questions for Nitzavim Vayeilech 2026

Nitzavim

1. The Levush in the halachos of Yamim Noraim, brought by the Taz in תרפ'ב, holds that to say מלוך על כל העולם כולו בכבודך is redundant, and you should just say מלוך על כל העולם, or מלוך על העולם כולו. Bring a raya from our parsha that the Torah does use that form.

2. Another language question.   We think of “from x to x” as from beginning to end, like from a to z, from soup to nuts (we would say "from gefilte fish to compot,) or from top to bottom.  But when Avraham told the king of Sedom that he wanted nothing from him, he said מחוט ועד שרוך נעל, from a thread to a leather strap, both trifling items. Apparently, it was used for emphasis, to mean “absolutely nothing,” like gornisht mit gornisht. Where do we find the same expression in this week’s parsha.

3.  The word for master, מר, is a homonym for the word for bitter. Where do we find the same kind of homonym in this week's parsha, where the same word is used for master and for bitter.

4. In last week's parsha, the dikduk of Sefer Torah is feminine.

Find where in this week's parsha, Sefer Torah is masculine.

 5. Only in this parsha are we told that Sedom and Amora had sister cities that were destroyed along with them. What are their names?

6. Pesukim in our parsha that say that if you sincerely resolve to do teshuva, then Hashem will help you do it.

7. A passuk about teshuva in our parsha that hints to the name of the month before Rosh Hashanna.

Vayeilech

1.  There is an opinion among the Rishonim that a Geir is not obligated to come to the Beis HaMikdash for Aliyah l'Regel, because he does not own land from the division of Eretz Yisrael, and the Gemara in Pesachim 8b says that only those who own land are chayav in Aliyah l'Regel. Some Rishonim disagree, and say he is chayav- the Rambam does not bring any such petur and the Meiri clearly argues. But assuming that he is pattur from Aliyah l'Regel, there is one regel when he has to be in Yerushalayim and one where he has to be in the Beis HaMikdash. What are they?

2. Does the Torah obligate people to go to the Mikdash for Hakhel.

3. Find a remez for techiyas hameisim in the parsha.

Corollary: why is it that we never find explicit mentions of kiyum haneshama, much less techiyas hameisim, in Torah she'biksav.

4. Where do we find that in cases of tortious interference, the malefactor is liable for opportunity cost.  In other words- that where a person wrongly disrupts a relationship between two parties, he is liable for the resulting loss of a benefit.

Netzavim

The passuk itemizes everyone, and it could have skipped כולכם. You see that this is an acceptable style of speech. All of you: x, y, and z.

According to the Rama miPano brought in Reb Akiva Eiger on Chulin 4b, the word "kol," even in Tanach, is not meant to be taken literally. I realized this when working on

In light of Rosh Hashannah, this is a perfect example of סקירא אחת and כבני מרון. As a group-כולכם.  But equally, an examination of every individual -כל איש ישראל.

In 29:10.

In light of Rosh Hashannah, I think the point is that

that every human being stands in judgment before the Ribono shel Olam, from the greatest to the least, all face the same judgment. And who knows who is favored? We can not know from our human eyes.

and in Shamayim, in the world of truth,

The same span we see between a king and a child might exist between the two who we see as the lowest, the chotev eitzim and the shoev mayim.

3.  The word for master, מר, is a homonym for the word for bitter. Where do we find the same kind of homonym in this week's parsha, where the same word is used for master and for bitter.

29:9

4. In last week's parsha, the dikduk of Sefer Torah is feminine.

Find where in this week's parsha, Sefer Torah is masculine.

Rashi explains

In the first, it is tipcha meircha. In the second, it is meircha tipcha. Mercha begins a phrase, tipcha is a separator.

But this explanation really explains nothing. The difference in trop is a consequence of a difference in meaning. What remains to be seen is why did the Torah change the description of Sefer Torah from Sefer (Torah) to (Sefer) Torah?

I do not know.

 5. Only in this parsha are we told that Sedom and Amora had sister cities that were destroyed along with them. What are their names?

29:22, Adma and Tzevoyim, from the five city axis of

Reb Chaim Kanievsky asks why Tzoar was not mentioned here, and he says that it was destroyed in a different manner.

6. Pesukim in our parsha that say that if you sincerely resolve to do teshuva, then Hashem will help you do it.

30:2,

 Ramban-

7. A passuk about teshuva in our parsha that hints to the name of the month before Rosh Hashanna.

30:6,

True, the name of the month is not lashon hakodesh and has no more kedusha than Yom Rishon being called Sunday. But I think that simanim were put into the Torah in anticipation of the name the Jewish People will actually use, no less than references to individuals who would be born and named thousands of years later or countries that did not exist at the time of Mattan Torah. Also, once you know that the names of Malachim also came from Bavel, it should be obvious that they have true significance, no less than מנצפ'ך. As the Satmarer says in his Tshuvos Divrei Yoel (OC 15)

In light of Rosh Hashannah, it's kedai to remember how the Kitzur organized them.

I would only add אנה לידו ושמתי לך מקום, the reference to Arei Miklat, in that the month of Elul and the Yamim Noraim are the refuge for one who wants to be saved from his terrible fate.

Vayeilech

He has to be in Yerushalayim on Pesach. All but one Rishon, Tosfos in Pesachim 2b mei'alyah, say that land is not necessary for the chiyuv korban.

From our parsha - 31:12. He has to be in the Beis HaMikdash on Sukkos in the year of Shemittah, for Hakhel. The Torah says clearly וגרך אשר בשעריך that Geirim do have to be there. (Taama d'Kra.)

It is true that the Rambam (3 Chagiga 2) says כל הפטור מן הראיה פטור ממצות הקהל חוץ מן הנשים והטף והערל and does not mention Geirim, but that is because he holds that Geirim are chayav in R'iyah.

2. Does the Torah obligate people to go to the Mikdash for Hakhel.

The pesukim say (31:11-12)

Some people see this as a machlokes Rambam saying it's only an obligation on the king and the leaders to gather the people, and the Chinuch who says every person is obligated to pay attention. Rambam Asei 16-

I don't accept that the Rambam means that. Why would he argue on the Gemara in Kiddushin 34 that says that women would be pattur because of Zeman Grama if not for the explicit obligation. Also, how can it be that the king has an obligation to teach, but the people have no obligation to be taught.  There is no reason to say something when it is so obvious. It's kal vachomer bigger than
The same question would apply to Birkas Kohanim. The Kohanim definitely have a mitzvah. Do the people have a mitzva to be present? Same issue.

Whatever you feel about this question, some want to relate this to the question about our Krias HaTorah, whether it is a personal obligation for individuals- Biur Halacha 146:2 dh יוש מתירים and Igros OC IV:23, or an obligation on the Tzibur as a whole that Krias HaTorah must take place in a minyan- Rosh Brachos 1:7 and Tzitz Eliezer 18:5, that as long as a minyan is paying attention, you can be maavir sedra or do the daf.

On this topic, there is a Chasam Sofer who strongly emphasizes that the Mitzva of Hakhel requires that you pay attnetion to every single word. In the Drashos page 26 he asks that bringing the children is good for the children, but the fathers are going to try to explain what the king is saying to their children, and they won't be able to pay proper attention to their own mitzva. They might hear it, technically, but it will be מתעסק, and they will not be yotzei. He learns this is the Gemara's question of טף למה הן באין.
Here is his answer:
Yes, he won't be yotzei. But it's worth it to lose this once in seven year national gathering mitzvah of Torah b'Rabbim in order to be mechaneich your children.

3. Find a remez for techiyas hameisim in the parsha.

Corollary: why is it that we never find explicit mentions of kiyum haneshama, much less techiyas hameisim, in Torah she'biksav, until the time of the Neviim.

32:39

and 31:16, from San 90b, - but it depends on the punctuation, whether the וקם ends the first phrase or begins the next one. We hold that since the word וקם is אין לו הכרע, the pshat in the pasuk is correct either way so it is a raya to techiyas hameisim (Maharsha there in Sanhedrin.) The minim held that it's either/or, and only one is correct, so it's no raya.

4. Where do we find that in cases of tortious interference, the malefactor is liable for opportunity cost.  In other words- that where a person wrongly disrupts a relationship between two parties, he is liable for the resulting loss of a benefit.

32:51

Elul and Ani LeDodi

Many people wonder about the remez of אני לדודי in the name Elul. In the Torah, we do not have names for months, only numbers. (One month is given a name in the Torah, in Shemos 34:18, Nisan is called חודש האביב; and three months are given names in Melachim I:6-  Iyar is זיו, Tishrei is חודש האיתנים, and MarCheshvan is בול. These are either purely descriptive or, in my opinion, what they were called by the Knaanim or Ivrim, and interpretations such as איתנים as a reference to the Avos is just an asmachta, or, as the Tiferes Yisrael says in many places, such as Gittin 4:6 and Sanhedrin 1:6 from the Maharil, when Chazal adopted foreign words they often gave them drush meanings as if they were Lashon HaKodesh. Like Geirus baal korcha.)

In any case, the name of this month, Elul, along with all the names of the months, was acquired during our seventy year exile in Bavel. It is not Lashon HaKodesh any more than Yom Shlishi is Tuesday. The Yerushalmi in RH 1:2 and the Medrash Rabba Breishis 48, say that the names of the months and even the names of Malachim came along with us from Bavel,

Yerushalmi:

Medrash:

The Ramban in Shemos 12:2 says that adopting the names of the months was Chazal's way of reminding us of Hashem's chesed in ending Galus Bavel.

But before that, the months were just numbered, as are the days of the week. If so, are these remazim purely artificial and unrelated to any real meaning of the word?

Two answers.

One: as you will see, the remez is brought by a Rishon from a Medrash. If so, it does not matter if it is "really" related to the name "Elul." The truth of the message is all that matters, and you have Rishonim who attest to that truth.

Two, once you know that the names of Malachim also came from Bavel, it should be obvious that they have true significance, no less than מנצפ'ך. As the Satmarer says in his Tshuvos Divrei Yoel (OC 15)

So: What is the makor for this Drasha.

We know this abbreviation from the time of the Rishonim, one of whom had it in a Medrash. I've arranged the mekoros chronologically.

 Rav Yeshayah Horowitz, 1555-1630.

A beautiful drasha from the Lubavitcher Rebbe that I came across, a drasha for Parshas Re'eh.

I particularly enjoyed the Lubavitcher's use of My life experience of Elul would express itself by saying So I had to do a double take, and it was refreshing to see the word  להתעודד used.

Rosh Hashannah 2025, First Day before Tekiyos

R Schwab, in Maayan and On Prayer

Birkas hashachar, last bracha is maavir sheinah. This is the bracha hasmucha for Yehi Ratzon. It's not a random connection, like Borei Nefashos and Tefillas Haderech. This is how Chazal wrote it. What is the connection between the bracha and Yehi Ratzon No connection is evident. It seems totally incongruous.

Tenuma, between sleep and wakefulness, this should be the first bracha of the day, not the last of the set.

Previous three refer to klal Yisroel.

Who was the first man to sleep? Adam. When does it say he woke? It doesn't. He never woke until Mattan Torah. The kol Shofar of Mattan Torah was עורו ישנים.  By the goyim, woke means the primacy of individual desire over discipline, and the rejection of divine ethics. For us, who received the Torah, our woke is a wakefulness of We do not have to be slaves to our physical and egoistic desires. We can be what we were born to be, true avdei Hashem

Tekias Shofar is the great awakening. Rambam.

First Night Rosh Hashannah 2025

The Mishna in RH 16 says

Maharsha,

Rav Olshin in Yareiah leMoadim RH 380 says a different teretz. He brings the Maharsha in Sotah about the four kitos, chanafim leitzim shakranim lashon hara that aren't’ mekabel pnei Shechina.

The Maharsha points out that the Gemara only brings the end of the passuk, and when you look at the beginning of the passuk, you chap a tzitter. The Passuk in Hoshea is

He says

We see two tremendous things in this Maharsha.

Number one: that Rosh Hashannah is more than Din. It is being received in front of the Shechina. As the Gemara in Rosh Hashanna says, the moment of Tekias Shofar is like standing in the Kodesh Kodashim in front of the Aron and the Shechina.

It is not davening from far away, it is personally appearing in Beis Din.  This is why the Mishna says ovrin lefanav instead of Din.

Number two: People with sins can come in and plead their case. But there are people whose middos are so repulsive, that the RBSO doesn’t want to see them in front of Him. Since these people ein mekablos, they are not even allowed in to plead their case before Hashem. They have to send it in by mail.

We see that besides teshuva for aveiros, it is vitally-  במלא מובן המלה- important to correct bad middos.

(See Rambam Teshuva 7:3-

A perfect example can be seen in Ohr Yisrael 26, the story of the "chasid echad" as Reb Yisroel Salanter understood it.

This was a man who got into a fight with his wife Erev Rosh Hashannah, and the experience forced him to realize that he was a ka'asan, and so he must also be a baal gaava, because only a baal gaava can be a ka'asan. We have a protocol on how to deal with the correction of bad middos, but it is a lengthy process, and this was an emergency. It was erev Rosh Hashannah, and it would be a disaster if he came before Hashem with this middah ra'ah. So he had to use the nuclear option to break his midda ra'ah of ga'ava and ka'as: He went to the cemetery and slept in a grave

My son Rav Shlomo told me a story involving a friend. He had been in Meron at the disaster, and ever since then, it really bothered him that such a tragedy could strike a group of people sincerely seeking hisorerus. Two weeks later, he, all of twenty years old, was on a bus with his wife of one month. A terrorist suddenly got on the bus and pointed a gun at them. His wife was sitting, there was a woman in the aisle with a child, and he knocked her down to the floor.  As he was falling with her he was shot. The terrorist was quickly killed, medics got on the bus, and they took him to the hospital. It took four hours for him to get out of danger, but he survived. Afterwards, the medics and doctors visited him, and told him that he had died several times, but chasdei hashem, they pulled him back to life, but they were wondering. Whenever he was semi conscious, he sang something about Tov Hashem lakol verachamav al kol maasav. They wanted to know why he was singing that song.

He told them very clearly; he had been at Meron and it disturbed him terribly, it shook his faith. Now, he was sure he was dying, because he saved the life of a mother and her child. He felt, at that moment, a terrible resentment. He had just gotten married, he was twenty years old, his whole life he lived as a true ben Torah, and this is his reward? A moment after that thought came to him, he said to himself, wait a second. In one minute, you're going to die, and you are going to be standing in front of the Ribono Shel Olam, in front of His Beis Din. Do you want to come bearing a grudge against the Ribono shel Olam? No, you definitely do not. You want to come with emuna peshuta shleima. So he began repeating the passuk in Ashrei, Tov Hashem Lakol verachamav al kol maasav.

(similar story from my son Rav Mordechai. He was in a car with a friend, and they were inches away from a disastrous accident at high speed. His friend, understandably, yelled a word you would not say in polite company. BH, they avoided the accident. Mordechai asked his friend, look, you know that if we didn't manage to get away at the last split second, we would both have died. We would come in front of the Malach Gavriel, and he would say to you, "Excuse me, what did you just say?" You really don't want that you be your last word.  This deserves serious attention, because, as HaRav Avraham Wagner writes,

"If the Shechinah sees matters of impropriety — ערות דבר, literally, improper speech — it turns away from us (see Devarim 23:15; Yerushalmi, Terumos 1:4; Mesillas Yesharim ch. 11; Introduction to Sefer Chafetz Chaim). ")

Lesson is that as Rosh Hashannah begins, we are brought lifnei Hamelech. Almost everyone gets a chance to plead their case in front of the Ribono shel Olam. But if your Neshama is repulsive, if you’re a baal gaiva, a shakran, a mesaper lashon hara, you’re not getting in at all. Everyone else is kivnei maron, but not you. You have to send it in the mail. You all know the difference between personal appearance and filling out a sheet and sending it in. What does my Neshama look like? Am I from the kitos the Ribono shel Olam does not allow in? This is a time when you have to get a grip on yourself. If you want the chance to plead before the Ribono shel Olam, you have to let the scales fall away, reach deep inside to be your best self, and you will be able to appear before Hashem, kivnei maron, and Hashem will hear your tefillos for a Gut gebencht yor.

Shabbos Shuva Pei Vov 2025

Two short drashos.

Before Musaf:

First, I said that I was not going to do questions on the parsha, because today, only one question really matters- Why did God give us life, and what are we doing with it. I talked a little about the idea of a tafkid, and the Gaon in Mishlei about Neviim being called הרואה, and the disparate ideas about how to tell what you were born to do, which I discuss here:  Tafkid: Every Person is Born With a Specific Mission תפקיד ויעוד

Then the main topic: A discussion of the Minhag Sefarad brought by R Natronai Gaon to fast and say Selichos on Shabbos Shuva.

I got many mareh mekomos from R Yerucham Olshin's Yareiach Lemoadim.

The Rosh in RH 4:14

The Tur in 602 brings the minhag to say slichos on Shabbos and disagrees.

Beis Yosef defends the minhag

Rav Olshin says the Beis Yosef is not sufficient, because by a siege, the danger is imminent, but during Aseres Yemei Teshuva, there are ten days, you don't have to fast davka on Shabbos.

He offers two explanations.
One, from the Yaaros Dvash, that the ten days are not a span of which you can choose your moment; every moment is necessary, and one lost moment is irretrievable.
Along the same lines, he brings from the Mishna Berura in 603:sk2 that the seven days after RH before YK correspond with and that day throughout the year, and the Noda BeYehuda that each day rectifies the sins of  that day, and from the Drashos HaTzlach citing the Ari zal that relates this to mafrishin KG seven days before YK.

Two, he brings from Rav Refoel Hamburger from the Zohar a reification concept- that it's not just that he rectifies the aveiros he did on that day; he actually repairs the damage he did to "the day" itself.
(If this were a real shiur and not just divrei hisorrerus,, I would have said that it is צריך עיון גדול to say you can "repair" a damaged Shabbos by doing farkert from kavod ve'oneg.)

I suggested a different mehalach. I quoted the Gemara in Yoma 87a,
to show that בהמצאו is an opportunity, but it is also a danger. That being the case, not using the opportunity increases the danger, and that is why they had a minhag to fast on Shabbos.

Main Drasha, before Mincha:

Asking Hashem to turn someone else's heart to Teshuva.

I brought the story of R Meir and Bruria in Brachos 10a, and the story of Abba Chilkiyah and his wife in Taanis 23b. (The צ"ע is that R Meir accepted his wife's advice, but Abba Chilkiyah apparently did not, because he told the shluchim that this is what he does and this is what his wife does.)

Kasha of the Maharsha.

(Important side observation:

In both cases, it was the wife who made the suggestion. Why? Because they benched licht. Every woman who bentches licht davens that Hashem should help her husband/children/whoever to be shomrei Torah uMitzvos and Yerei'ei shamayim. The kasha and lomdus of הכל בידי שמים חוץ מיראת שמים is totally irrelevant to women. Their mesora goes back to Sara Imeinu, and it is at least as ancient and important as that of the Yeshiva world, whose mesora only goes back to Moshe Rabbeinu. Reb Meir and Abba Chilkiyah never benched licht, so how would they know of such a tefilla?)

Note: important Shelah:

Chazon Ish OC p.516

Rav Dessler 4:271 and elsewhere

so all they asked was that their nekudas habechira be moved up the field, and causing Reb Meir such pain would not be on their agenda.

I suggest a different answer based on a shiur from Rav Rudderman in the Sichos Avodas Levi by Harav Reuven Askowitz

In Maamar 79 Rav Rudderman talks about how teshuva requires awareness of both the fact that he transgressed Hashem's command, and that what he did was devastating to himself and to the world. If a person does not recognize the harm he caused, his teshuva will be lacking. Obviously, teshuva has an infinite range, as Rabbeinu Yona says. But this is a very important element. A person has to recognize that it's not only bad because Hashem said not to do it, but also Hashem said not to do it because it is terribly bad. It is a tremendous chiddush that teshuva not only is only the transgression, but also on the tuma/pegam/destruction caused by the sin. Our portraits of Dorian Grey are our neshamos, and beyond that, as Reb Chaim says in the Nefesh HaChaim, there is endless harm in the brutalization of the entire briah.

I said over Rav Rudderman's piece, from Reuven's אתה פתחת בתשובה, to אתה חונן before השיבנו in Shmoneh Esrei, to the Rosh about Asham Talui, to Nachum ish Gamzu, to illustrate what it means to recognize the harm caused by any aveira or midda ra'ah.

Back to the question. If a person sees the damage he caused, it is not hard to be chozer b'tshuva. The tefilla is not that they should have yiras shamayim. The tefilla was that they should take their blinders off, they should have a moment of clear vision, and see what they've done to themselves and to the world. Some people, who are להכעיס, will not care. But most reshoim will see the truth and be chozer b'teshuva.

Before Tekiyos RH day 1 pei hei 2024

 Adapted from Reb Yessochor Frand

We just read the story of Chana in the Haftorah.  Chana was childless. She came to the Mishkan every year to cry her heart out.  Chana suffered the humiliation of her husband having a second wife who was blessed with children, and who taunted Chana over her inability to have children. Chazal tell us that Penina had a noble reason for doing that; she wanted to inspire Chana to pray more. But Chana was miserable.  Chana’s tefillos were finally answered on Rosh Hashana. She eventually gave birth to a son who grew up to become the great navi Shmuel, a man so central to the development of Klal Yisrael that Dovid HaMelech compares him to Moshe and Aharon –

The story of Chana  is so central to Yiddishkeit that it forms the matrix for Shmoneh Esrei every day;

and specifically the story of Chana contains a lesson that is so vital and central to the message of Rosh Hashana that not only do we read this Haftorah on the first day of Rosh Hashana, but the whole Tefillas Musaf on Rosh Hashana was structured around the nine mentions of G-d’s name in Chana’s prayer.

In Brochos (29a), the Gemara says that on Rosh Hashana, we daven a Shmoneh Esrei  of nine brachos; the standard opening three, the standard closing three, and the middle three special brachos of Malchiyos, Zichronos, & Shofros — the middle portions of the Rosh Hashana Musaf service dealing with the coronation of Hashem over ourselves and over all of creation, commemoration of Hashem’s relationship with the world, and the importance throughout history of the sound of the Shofar. The Gemara says that the source for the number of these blessings, nine, comes from the nine Azkoros — the nine times that G-d’s Name is mentioned in the prayer of Chana [Samuel 2:1-10].

What is so important about this episode that causes us to base the central tefillah of Rosh Hashana on tefillas Chana?

Chana’s Shira, her Tefilla, emphasizes that life is full of changing fortunes. Chana speaks of Hashem’s control of national security, of the economy, and of every individual’s private life and fate: her message is that G-d makes some people poor and he makes some people rich. He makes the haughty low and the humble high. Fortunes keep changing.

The bows of the mighty are broken, And the faltering are girded with strength.

Men once sated must hire out for bread; Men once hungry hunger no more.

While the barren woman bears seven, The mother of many is forlorn.

Then Chana asks,  Who it is that stands behind all these changes? She explains

Hashem deals death and gives life, Casts down into Sheol and raises up.

The LORD makes poor and makes rich; He casts down, He also lifts high.

And why does Hashem do this?

Because

He guards the steps of His faithful, But the wicked perish in darkness— For not by strength shall man prevail.

This is Chana’s message to the Jewish People on Rosh Hashana: Life is so fickle. Fortunes are so fragile. Rosh Hashana is an unbelievably scary day!

Emotionally, Rosh Hashana is one of the most difficult days of the year. We can deal with Yom Kippur. We do not eat. It is a day of Mercy. We separate ourselves from the rest of the world and we pour our hearts out. But what are we supposed to do on Rosh Hashana? Rosh Hashana is the Yom HaDin (Day of Judgment). Everything is riding on this day. And yet there is an obligation to observe this day as a Festival — looking and acting and eating like a Yom Tov. How do we cope with this dichotomy?

Rav Tzadok HaCohen points out that the Shevarim and Teruahs, which are the broken sounds of the shofar representing the crying out of a broken spirit, must always be sandwiched between two Tekiahs. The firm, unbroken, Tekiah sound represents Simcha. This, Rav Tzadok says, captures the theme of the day.

On the exterior, we must act and feel like it is a Yom Tov. But on the interior — between the Tekios — we must have a terrible, terrible, fear: a fear that anything can happen.

Some years, in tranquil times, we might hear this and think that this is a mussar shmuess, but we’re doing pretty well, and all we need is for the Ribono shel Olam to sign off on extending last year’s contract. Not this year, we’re not. Not one Jew in the world, from the billionaires in Panama to the bnei Torah living off Kollel checks, is thinking that we are doing just fine.

This is what Chana is trying to tell us. For some people this year will be one of “the barren woman turning into a mother of seven”. But hanging over our heads is the terrible fear of fate of Penina.

Chazal say that the 100 Shofar sounds of Rosh Hashana correspond to the 100 cries that Sisra’s mother cried on the day of battle). Rav Schwab asked, what is the significance of associating our holy Shofar sounds to the wailings of that savage? Rav Schwab explained that the wailings of Sisro’s mother represented the uncertainty of the future. If Sisra would come back victorious, this would represent the greatest triumph of his military career. On the other hand, he might come back in a coffin. Sisro’s mother did not know which scenario would occur, so she wailed out of uncertainty and fear.

Life and Death. Success and Failure. On Rosh Hashana, everything lies in the balance of Judgment — nothing less than totally changing out fates. And yet, we as Jews, have to surround these emotions with the Tekiah — the firm blast of confidence.

We cannot wear our emotions on our sleeve. But we must realize that what will be determined on this day is nothing less than the fate of our lives, of our family’s lives, of our community’s lives, and indeed the life of the entire world. Anything can happen. This is the message of Chana. There are no givens, there are no “Chazakas, nothing can be taken for granted. All we can control is how we behave, how we daven, how thoughtfully we lead our lives to be good servants of the RBSO that He can be proud of.

May we be zocheh to what Chana said in the end of her shira:

The foes of Hashem shall be shattered; He will thunder against them in the heavens. Hashem will judge the ends of the earth. He will give power to His king, And triumph to His anointed one,

We should all be zocheh to see what Chana saw be’ruach hakodesh, the bi’as hamashiach and the geula shleima bimheira b’yameinu .
