Toldos, Breishis 27:46. Kibbud Av and Shiduchim.

Rivka told Yaakov to stay away from the local women - she said they disgusted her to death. Any decent child would take such strong words from a parent to heart. But Rav Sternbuch finds that Rivka's choice of words illustrate the opinion of the Gaon and the Netziv regarding the limits of Kibud Av when it comes to a child's shiduch.

The Rema in YD 240:25, from the Maharik, paskens that a child does not have to listen to a parent's orders regarding shiduchim. If a child wants to marry someone, and the parent objects, the mitzva of Kibud Av does not apply and the child is not obliged to heed the parent. This applies to sons and daughters, to fathers and mothers.

The Gaon says this is because the mitzva of kibud is limited to the parent's personal needs, such as food and lodging and clothing. This does not include the choice of a child's spouse.

The Netziv says that applies when the parent insists on a particular shidduch for the child's own good. If, however, the child's choice of a particular spouse would cause the parent emotional distress, be it social disgrace or personal grief, then the child is obligated under the mitzva of kibud to comply.

With this Netziv in mind, Rav Sternbuch says that this explains why Rivka did not say that the local women were just "רעות בנות כנען". Had she said this, Yaakov would remain free to make his own assessment and his own decision. By saying that the local women disgusted her unto death, this brought it under the rubric of kibud for the parent's own emotional health, a true kibud obligation.

From Rav Sternbuch here:

(The mareh makom to the Netziv is incorrect. It is in YD 50, not 7.)
The Netziv:

Chazon Ish EH p 287 agrees with the Netziv. He distinguishes between a father that is upset that the child did what he wanted and not what the father wants, where the father is obligated to stay out of it and the son has no mitzvas kibud, and a father that is upset that such a girl would come into his family and his son's family. Precisely what the Netziv says.
I've seen melaktim that think the Chazon Ish contradicts the Netziv. This is because there is no longer any high financial or scholarly threshold to be crossed before one prints a sefer.

From Yalkut Yosef, the psakim of Rav Ovadiah Yosef written by his son R Yitzchak. He also says like the Netziv, and makes the same connection to Rivka's words as R Sternbuch.

The Tzitz Eliezer and Shevet HaLevi pasken not like the Netziv, the Chazon Ish, and Rav Ovdiah Yosef.  They say that the "arur makleh" only applies where that was the child's motivation. If the child makes a personal choice for his own needs, and the parents are distressed by the child's choice, this is not included in Makleh, and the Maharik's rule will still apply.

Note:
This post deals exclusively with the Halacha. Outside of Halacha, there are two matters of common sense.

It is hard to believe that a decision so personal and so important to one's future as who to marry could be in the power of anyone but the person himself. Who has any right to interfere?
On the other hand, that is obviously not the case with girls under 12. Perhaps having brought someone into the world gives the parents rights equal to the child's. And again, we live in a Democracy and in a time when personal rights are paramount. In the ancient world, the king had the right of life or death over his subjects, to say nothing of the right to decide who each would marry. In fact, he himself was required to marry the person that would benefit his family and his kingdom. He could not simply marry his inamorata. To some extent, a family was a small kingdom, and the paterfamilias its king.

Second, obviously young people have no idea of what they're doing or what matters or what they're getting themselves into. If they don't listen to their parents, they're probably making a big mistake. There are exceptions, of course, where the child has more seichel and less gaiva than the parents, but generally, even without the Netziv, it makes sense to pay serious attention to them. Where you are having trouble doing that, consult with a wise and experienced person before making a decision.
