Why Does Hoshiah Na Belong in Hallel, Especially For the Naanuim.

From Harav Dovid Cohen, Rosh Yeshiva of Chevron Yeshiva, in his Sefer Zman Simchaseinu.

I have  it here because my son, Harav Moshe, pointed out a very simple answer that for some reason Harav Cohen does not mention. More than that, even though he brings the Maharit that the Oneg Yomtov quotes in his hakdama, there is a much more relevant Maharit that uses Moshe's tzushtell to clearly answer the question.

(I just fixed the quote from the passuk, because in Divrei Hayamim is says עצי היער, not כל עצי היער as it says in Tehillim.)

Here is what my son Harav Moshe pointed out, and with the Maharit, it is כפתור ופרח.

The Rosh Yeshiva only talks about the naanuim. He could have asked that bichlal, what is "Hoshiah Na" doing in Hallel? The answer is that bakasha belongs after shevach. How do I know that? From the Mishna in Brachos. What is the logic of this din? The Maharit.

Bekitzur: He should have written the piece differently. This is how I would have written it, and I'm sure he would have done it this way if he had seen the Maharit:

What is הושיע נא doing in Hallel?

The answer to that question is in the Mishna in Brachos 54

From this we see Chazal's rule- a general concept- that after shevach v'hodaah for the past, you should make a bakasha for the future. On this, the Maharit in his Drashos:

that Bakasha after shevach is the biggest shevach v'hoda'ah.

Reb Yosef Ber in Reshimos Shiurim on Sukkah packs this entire discussion into one sentence:

Before Yizkor 2026 5677

Once again, I'm posting this before careful reading and before editing because there are people who come here for tochen for drashos, and I hope it is helpful to offer something I've used and found effective and memorable.  If I wait till it's printable, it will stay in the drafts forever and be of no use to anyone but myself. So here it is. Be charitable.

In the past, I've said that of the four times a year we say Yizkor, only one is a real Yizkor, on Yom Kippur. The Yizkor of Yom Kippur was known even in the times of the Tannaim. The Yizkor we do on the Shalosh Regalim was not even known in the time of the early Rishonim, and developed later, since we are giving tzedaka, Ish kematnas yado, we want people to give tzedaka for the neshamos too.

Example: the Levush in 490:9

I also say that there is a remez to the Yizkor of the Shalosh Regaim in יראה כל זכורך, meaning the people you remember, and לא יראו פני ריקם. But that's just my drush.  But I recently realized that of the four Yizkors, the Shalosh Regalim are true Yizkors, and Yom Kippur is not-  the opposite of what I had said before.

There are two times that the neshamos come back to be with us- at a wedding, and on the Yamim Noraim.

Naniach that Hashem lets them daven on the Yamim Noraim, why do they have to come to shul? The Chasam Sofer says that are Why can't they daven in Gan Eden?

Bishlema they come to weddings, so they can have simcha along with you, you can share your simcha with them. I say from personal experience that actually being at a simcha is much better than being on Zoom. But what is the need to come to shul with us?

I believe that צדקה includes money and chesed, for the yachid or for the rabbim. Being mekabel to do Tzedaka v'Chesed is the same zechus for the neshamos.

It is kedai to realize that for the neshamos, today is the closest they're getting to תחיית המתים until the final trump. They come to shul and they join us in davening. When they're here, you have the opportunity to give them nachas and a real aliyas neshama, (even better than the pathetic lekach und bronfen. I do not know how they pick which descendant to go to- maybe they pick the one they always liked better than you. In my case, it would be my sister Booba. But more likely they go to the one who is going to make the best neder in their zechus. Also, conveniently, at one of my siblings davens at home, so that works in my favor.)
I did not say the last couple of sentences in shul.

Questions for Haazinu 2026

Our Parsha Questions are crafted to be challenging even to Talmidei Chachamim but answerable by anyone who pays careful attention to the Krias HaTorah. I  saw this practiced in Marlboro, NJ.  They are meant to be presented before Krias HaTorah and answered afterwards, giving everyone the chance to show the answer chapter and verse. I usually include some that are simple so that everyone can participate.   I find that it increases attention to Krias HaTorah and is mentally stimulating both for the audience and for me.

1. What is the singular of ענבים

32:14

2. In Megillas Eicha, isolation is seen as a tragedy. Where in this Parsha do we see that it can also be a positive for Klal Yisrael.

23:9

3. Find a remez for techiyas

hameisim in the parsha.

Corollary: why is it that we never find explicit mentions of kiyum haneshama, much less techiyas hameisim, in Torah she'biksav, until the time of the Neviim.

32:39

4. Where do we find that in cases of tortious interference, the malefactor is liable for opportunity cost.  In other words- that where a person wrongly disrupts a relationship between two parties, he is liable for the resulting loss of a benefit.

32:51

Shabbos Shuva Drasha 2026 5677

Excuse: I am posting this because I want it available to the people who come here looking for a good drasha. As you will see, it is just roshei prokim, and needs to be improved a lot. I do not have time to fix it, I have shiurim to prepare that need to be done right now,, but I took half an hour off to get it in writing. It is good material, it is a new perspective, and I think my olam was moved and inspired by it.

In our community, we see a lot of improvement in Tefilla, we see tzedaka, we see less talking in shul, we truly see that people are taking the yemei hadin seriously. We do not see the one most important idea of AYT, and that is teshuva. I do not see that there is a spirit of teshuva. Why don't we sense an urgency to do teshuva? That is the most important aspect of the yamim noraim.

Because Teshuva usually means that the person makes a hachlata to do teshuva, and פתחו לי כפתחו של מחט and Hashem will open the way of Teshuva כפתחו של אולם. But, and this is a very very big problem, the Rambam in the beginning of perek 4, people who are guilty of four categories of aveiros lose the siyata dishmaya that if they decide to do teshuva Hashem helps them. Hashem does not help these people. (See Avodas Hamelech on Rambam, written by son in law of Eliah Pruzhiner, Reb Moshe's uncle, - of all the twenty four aveiros that make teshuva harder, these create the biggest problem, the loss of siyata dishmaya.) I think that explains it. We don't see any urgency to do teshuva because the Ribono shel Olam is not giving us that important siyata dishmaya. Why? Because we fall under one of the four categories of aveiros. So yes, of course we all resolve to do teshuva. But the resolution goes nowhere, because you are in those four categories.

If so, what the eitza? See Reb Yaakov in Lech Lecha 18:21 d'h והנה where Avram negotiated that if there were fifty tzadikim. What is the hava amina? In rotten Sedom there would be fifty tzadikim, when Lot could barely survive there?? Because Hashem had come down with middas hadin, and the neshamos of the wicked people of Sdom felt something impending, and after that, it was takkeh possible there would be fifty baalei teshuva. They definitely did not have siyata dishmaya. But standing in front of the melech yosheiv al kisei din, 'Depend upon it, sir, when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully.'  (Samuel Johnson )  Or as Flannery O'Connor said about a selfish and miserable old woman who experiences a moment of decency before getting murdered by a character known as The Misfit,  'She would have been a good woman,” The Misfit said, “if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life'  That is where we stand today. Yom Kippur is tomorrow night. Such a matzav makes teshuva possible even for this group of people.

But there is a bigger problem. Yes, the Rambam says "echteh v'ashuv ein maspikin" but the Mishna actually says "echteh v'ashuv echteh v'ashuv ein maspikin."  The Gemara asks, why the repetition? Answers like Rav Huna amar Rav. So why does the Rambam say only one echteh ein maspikin?

Rav Bergman in Vol II page 269-270 says that the Rambam got the one "echteh v'ashuv ein maspikin" from the Rif's braisa, and it's separate from the Mishna. Pshat in the Gemara's question is, if one "echteh v'ashuv" is enough for ein maspikin, why does the Mishna say two? And the Gemara's answer is that it might happen that a person will say it two times, but he will never say it three, because by the third time, he doesn't even think of teshuva. Point is, one time, ein maspikin. Two times, he thinks it's muttar.

That means that not only doesn't he have siyata dishmaya, he won't even have siyata of himself. He won't think of teshuva at all. Now that is a very very serious problem.

But the Gaon by Dovid HaMelech's "chatasi" to Nassan haNavi, see Avi Ezri first piece in Hilchos Teshuva dh והנה on the ס after חטאתי לה' in Shmuel II:12:13. Once you say Chatasi, you are in a completely different parsha.

The truth is that it is not that simple. Just saying Chatasi doesn't accomplish a lot.

Rav Shimshon Pinkus on why Moshe davened 515 times and wasn't forgiven. Because he didn't say chatasi. Why? Because he could only say chatasi if he realized the chomer hachet, and it was such a dakus, he could not honestly say chatasi.  Rashi calls it an "עלילה" to make sure he did not enter Eretz Yisroel. It was a perfect Catch 22.

(Devarim 33:8)

Rashi:

I did not see R Pinkus inside, so I don't know how far he went with this. But I added that it's even better. Davka because Moshe Rabbeinu was such an anav he could not appreciate the seriousness of the aveira. Yes, for a malach, or for a perfect man, it would be a sin. But Moshe said, I am just a man, and for a man, it is impossible to say that this is a sin. So he could not say chatasi with the necessary regret and contrition.

We have the same problem. Imagine the person you consider the holiest man of our generation, or someone you knew from a previous generation. Imagine that you look into his window, you see him coming home at night, and he proceeds to spend the rest of his night doing exactly what you do at home. You would be shocked. Yes, that's how I behave, but that is because I am just a simple person, I am far from being a tzadik. but he? He's a tzadik gamur, and it is a disgrace that he acts that way.

And I say to you, you are sabotaging yourselves with low expectations, and it's not laudable humility that makes you feel that way. It is Rav Huna and it is your yetzer hara. You are better than you think you are. You are capable of being great, and considering what you're capable of being, living respectable lives of perfect adequacy, lives of "I am what I am", is a shame and a disgrace.  Yom Kippur requires that you do two things. Make a cheshbon hanefesh of what you are capable of being, and THEN make a cheshbon hanefesh of how short you have fallen and how far you have to go to reach that madreiga.

The Ponovezher Rov and the Arch

I am posting this because it is written so well. When my father told me the story, also contemporaneously, I think that he heard it from the Ponovezher's son, Reb Avrohom. The way I heard it was that his driver was rushing to get him to the airport, and the Rov insisted on stopping at the arch. The driver got more and more nervous, but the Rov was resolved, and he dismissed all the concerns. The Rov got out at the arch, and said exactly what this story quotes him as saying. But as I heard it, he actually kicked the arch.

When I said this over at a gathering in Chicago, Rashi Schnell, ע'ה, was very excited to hear it, because she said that when this happened, she was working at the Ponovezh office in New York, and everyone in the office heard about it, and it made, of course, an unforgettable roshem.

Questions for Nitzavim Vayeilech 2026

Our Parsha Questions are crafted to be challenging even to Talmidei Chachamim but answerable by anyone who pays careful attention to the Krias HaTorah. I  saw this practiced in Marlboro, NJ.  They are meant to be presented before Krias HaTorah and answered afterwards, giving everyone the chance to show the answer chapter and verse. I usually include some that are simple so that everyone can participate.   I find that it increases attention to Krias HaTorah and is mentally stimulating both for the audience and for me.

Nitzavim

1. The Levush in the halachos of Yamim Noraim, brought by the Taz in תרפ'ב, holds that to say מלוך על כל העולם כולו בכבודך is redundant, and you should just say מלוך על כל העולם, or מלוך על העולם כולו. Bring a raya from our parsha that the Torah does use that form.

2. Another language question.   We think of “from x to x” as from beginning to end, like from a to z, from soup to nuts (we would say "from gefilte fish to compot,) or from top to bottom.  But when Avraham told the king of Sedom that he wanted nothing from him, he said מחוט ועד שרוך נעל, from a thread to a leather strap, both trifling items. Apparently, it was used for emphasis, to mean “absolutely nothing,” like gornisht mit gornisht. Where do we find the same expression in this week’s parsha.

3.  The word for master, מר, is a homonym for the word for bitter. Where do we find the same kind of homonym in this week's parsha, where the same word is used for master and for bitter.

4. In last week's parsha, the dikduk of Sefer Torah is feminine.

Find where in this week's parsha, Sefer Torah is masculine.

 5. Only in this parsha are we told that Sedom and Amora had sister cities that were destroyed along with them. What are their names?

6. Pesukim in our parsha that say that if you sincerely resolve to do teshuva, then Hashem will help you do it.

7. A passuk about teshuva in our parsha that hints to the name of the month before Rosh Hashanna.

Vayeilech

1.  There is an opinion among the Rishonim that a Geir is not obligated to come to the Beis HaMikdash for Aliyah l'Regel, because he does not own land from the division of Eretz Yisrael, and the Gemara in Pesachim 8b says that only those who own land are chayav in Aliyah l'Regel. Some Rishonim disagree, and say he is chayav- the Rambam does not bring any such petur and the Meiri clearly says he is chayav. But assuming that he is pattur from Aliyah l'Regel, there is one regel when he has to be in Yerushalayim and one where he has to be in the Beis HaMikdash. What are they?

2. Does the Torah obligate people to go to the Mikdash for Hakhel.

3. Find a remez for techiyas hameisim in the parsha.

Netzavim

The passuk itemizes everyone, and it could have skipped כולכם. You see that this is an acceptable style of speech. All of you: x, y, and z.

According to the Rama miPano brought in Reb Akiva Eiger on Chulin 4b, the word "kol," even in Tanach, is not meant to be taken literally. I realized this when working on

In light of Rosh Hashannah, this is a perfect example of סקירא אחת and כבני מרון. As a group-כולכם.  But equally, an examination of every individual -כל איש ישראל.

In 29:10.

In light of Rosh Hashannah, I think the point is that

that every human being stands in judgment before the Ribono shel Olam, from the greatest to the least, all face the same judgment. And who knows who is favored? We can not know from our human eyes.

and in Shamayim, in the world of truth,

The same span we see between a king and a child might exist between the two who we see as the lowest, the chotev eitzim and the shoev mayim.

3.  The word for master, מר, is a homonym for the word for bitter. Where do we find the same kind of homonym in this week's parsha, where the same word is used for master and for bitter.

29:9

4. In last week's parsha, the dikduk of Sefer Torah is feminine.

Find where in this week's parsha, Sefer Torah is masculine.

Rashi explains

In the first, it is tipcha meircha. In the second, it is meircha tipcha. Mercha begins a phrase, tipcha is a separator.

But this explanation really explains nothing. The difference in trop is a consequence of a difference in meaning. What remains to be seen is why did the Torah change the description of Sefer Torah from Sefer (Torah) to (Sefer) Torah?

I do not know.

 5. Only in this parsha are we told that Sedom and Amora had sister cities that were destroyed along with them. What are their names?

29:22, Adma and Tzevoyim, from the five city axis of

Reb Chaim Kanievsky asks why Tzoar was not mentioned here, and he says that it was destroyed in a different manner.

6. Pesukim in our parsha that say that if you sincerely resolve to do teshuva, then Hashem will help you do it.

30:2,

 Ramban-

7. A passuk about teshuva in our parsha that hints to the name of the month before Rosh Hashanna.

30:6,

True, the name of the month is not lashon hakodesh and has no more kedusha than Yom Rishon being called Sunday. But I think that simanim were put into the Torah in anticipation of the name the Jewish People will actually use, no less than references to individuals who would be born and named thousands of years later or countries that did not exist at the time of Mattan Torah. Also, once you know that the names of Malachim also came from Bavel, it should be obvious that they have true significance, no less than מנצפ'ך. As the Satmarer says in his Tshuvos Divrei Yoel (OC 15)

In light of Rosh Hashannah, it's kedai to remember how the Kitzur organized them.

I would only add וַאֲשֶׁר לֹא צָדָה וְהָאֱלֹהִים אִנָּה לְיָדוֹ וְשַׂמְתִּי לְךָ מָקוֹם אֲשֶׁר יָנוּס שָׁמָּה מקום, the reference to Arei Miklat, in that the month of Elul and the Yamim Noraim are the refuge for one who wants to be saved from his terrible fate.

Vayeilech

He has to be in Yerushalayim on Pesach. All but one Rishon, Tosfos in Pesachim 2b mei'alyah, say that land is not necessary for the chiyuv korban.

From our parsha - 31:12. He has to be in the Beis HaMikdash on Sukkos in the year of Shemittah, for Hakhel. The Torah says clearly וגרך אשר בשעריך that Geirim do have to be there. (Taama d'Kra.)

It is true that the Rambam (3 Chagiga 2) says כל הפטור מן הראיה פטור ממצות הקהל חוץ מן הנשים והטף והערל and does not mention Geirim, but that is because he holds that Geirim are chayav in R'iyah.

2. Does the Torah obligate people to go to the Mikdash for Hakhel.

The pesukim say (31:11-12)

Some people see this as a machlokes Rambam saying it's only an obligation on the king and the leaders to gather the people, and the Chinuch who says every person is obligated to pay attention. Rambam Asei 16-

I don't accept that the Rambam means that. Why would he argue on the Gemara in Kiddushin 34 that says that women would be pattur because of Zeman Grama if not for the explicit obligation. Also, how can it be that the king has an obligation to teach, but the people have no obligation to be taught.  There is no reason to say something when it is so obvious. It's kal vachomer bigger than
The same question would apply to Birkas Kohanim. The Kohanim definitely have a mitzvah. Do the people have a mitzva to be present? Same issue.

Whatever you feel about this question, some want to relate this to the question about our Krias HaTorah, whether it is a personal obligation for individuals- Biur Halacha 146:2 dh יוש מתירים and Igros OC IV:23, or an obligation on the Tzibur as a whole that Krias HaTorah must take place in a minyan- Rosh Brachos 1:7 and Tzitz Eliezer 18:5, that as long as a minyan is paying attention, you can be maavir sedra or do the daf.

On this topic, there is a Chasam Sofer who strongly emphasizes that the Mitzva of Hakhel requires that you pay attnetion to every single word. In the Drashos page 26 he asks that bringing the children is good for the children, but the fathers are going to try to explain what the king is saying to their children, and they won't be able to pay proper attention to their own mitzva. They might hear it, technically, but it will be מתעסק, and they will not be yotzei. He learns this is the Gemara's question of טף למה הן באין.
Here is his answer:
Yes, he won't be yotzei. But it's worth it to lose this once in seven year national gathering mitzvah of Torah b'Rabbim in order to be mechaneich your children.

 3. Find a remez for techiyas hameisim in the parsha.

But it depends on the punctuation, whether the וקם ends the first phrase or begins the next one, וקם העם הזה וזנה. We hold that since the word וקם is אין לו הכרע, the pshat in the pasuk is correct either way so it is a raya to techiyas hameisim (Maharsha there in Sanhedrin.) The minim held that it's either/or, and only one is correct, so it's no raya.

ה.
