B'ha'aloscha, Bamidbar 11:16. The Reward is Yiras Shamayim.

I had posted the seed of this vort earlier this week, but it's gotten so much better, thanks to pilpul chaveirim, that it deserves a panim chadashos, and so I've re-posted it.

Medrash Rabba Bamidbar 15:7

It appears from this Medrash that the in the verse מפני שיבה תקום ויראת מאלהיך, the first clause is a mitzvah, and the second describes the result of doing the mitzvah.  מפני שיבה תקום , and if you do, then ויראת מאלהיך.

This Medrash is brought by the Sefer Chareidim, as follows:

On the basis of this Medrash, (and I saw it attributed to the Zohar as well,) several achronim (Bnei Yissoschor, Harav Eliahu Mishkovsky from Kfar Chasidim,) explain the Gemara in Brachos 28a about Rav Zeira.

1. It seems out of character for Rav Zeira, of all people, to choose to do a mitzva davka לקבל פרס, in order to receive reward.
2. If he was exhausted, what gave him the energy to engage in conversation about what was paskened in the Beis Medrash and to review it forty times.

The answer is that the schar Rav Zeira was seeking was increased Yiras Shamayim. If that's the schar, even Rav Zeira would choose to do that mitzva With the increase in Yiras Shamayim comes an  increase in Ahavas HaTorah, and with Ahavas HaTorah, you get an infusion of new energy. It's like Yaakov's ability to roll off the stone as soon as he saw Rachel.

It's a nice and useful and logical idea, especially in the context of the memra of Shimon Ha'Amsoni. . Indeed, Reb Micha Berger says, in a comment, that "consequence" or "effect" would be better choices of words than "Schar."  Reb Micha has written extensively on this topic, and one such article can be found here.  I responded that the term Schar mitzva is used even if it is an effect of the Mitzvah, so the use of the term "reward" in this post is not incorrect. Virtue may be its own reward, but it's still a reward.  Additionally, the idea that honoring talmidei chachamim leads to Yiras Shamayim is not, in my opinion, an obvious progression in the sense that doing Czerny leads to technical proficiency.

When I said this at my grandson's bar mitzva - Moishy Eisenberg יצ"ו - this past Wednesday in Lakewood, my brother law, Harav Yosaif Asher Weiss, wondered, if, in this string of clauses of
we interpret the first two as prescriptive and the last as a consequence, why is this not true in the other places the Torah says ויראת מאלהיך.

Harav Yosaif Asher suggested that in the other places, where the first clause/s are issurim, ויראת מאלהיך follows naturally as an admonition, a warning, as the Gemara in Kiddushin 32b says.  Here, though, the first clause is a mitzvas asei, and  ויראת מאלהיך as a warning would be incongruous.  This leads us to say that it is the schar of As far as I can tell, his rule is correct.

The expression appears in the Torah five times, as far as I know:

Vehadarta in Vayikra 19:32

Lifnei Iveir, Vaykira 19:14

Ona'as Devarim, Vayikra 25:17
Ribbis, Vayikra 25:35.
Not to force avodas parech upon an Eved Ivri, Vayikra 25:43

If anyone has another approach, please let me know. The only thing that bothered me was that the Gemara in Kiddushin does say that it is a warning davka here, which means that the Gemara holds that the expression fits by an assei.

However, as pointed out by HaRav Yehuda Oppenheimer, the fact remains that the Gemara in Kiddushin interprets the passuk differently than the Medrash, so it's perfectly valid to say that while the Gemara is not bothered by the ויראת in the context of an assei, the Medrash holds that it cannot be interpreted as the others are, and therefore reads it as a schar.  His words-

There's clearly a Machlokes between the Medrash and the Gemara. The Medrash says that ויראת in this Pasuk is a Schar and the Gemara says it's an Azhara. Hu Gufa - perhaps the reason the Medrash argues with the Gemara in this case is because the Medrash holds that by an Aseh a warning doesn't apply, unlike in the other Pesukim.

In all honesty, I believe that the drasha in the Medrash, and what I bring below from the Gaon, are not dinim, they are drashos. Where it makes sense, you darshen.  Where it doesn't, you don't.  I really don't think they mean this is the pshuto shel mikra.

More important than the lomdus aspect  is the basic idea - that expressing sincere kavod for Talmidei Chachamim enhances a person's yiras shamayim.

UPDATE:

I met Harav Hagaon Reb Simcha Soloveichik at the Novardiker dinner and he told me about the wonderful wonderful Gaon in Shabbos 23a and the Ran in Sanhedrin that fit in exactly with this idea.  Our Gemara says

But the Gaon has a different Girsa.  Here is the Gaon in Kol Eliahu:

It's marvelous. The Gaon is saying that when the passuk says

and the paragraph ends with
that is not a tzivui, it is a promise.
Also, he says, in the passuk
the beginning is the tzivui, and the end is the schar.
According to the Gaon, Ahava leads to having a son who is a talmid Chacham, (ואהבת- ושננתם לבניך) and Yira leads to being daveik to a talmid chacham, (תירא-ובו תדבק) for example, having a son in law who is a talmid chacham.
So we have a progress.  HIddur leads to Yira, as the Sefer Chareidim says. Yira leads to Dveikus.  Ahava leads to having a son in law a Talmid Chacham.
Even better, the Gaon says that giving kavod to a Talmid Chacham or showing love to a Talmid Chacham is is like giving Kavod and love to Hashem, because of Shimon/Nechemiah Ha'amsoni. So it is a Middah kneged middah.

Also, Reb Simcha told me that the Ran in Sanhedrin (in the sugya of who stands in front of Beis Din) brings from R Dovid Bonfid (talmid of Ramban, a Rebbi of the Ritva,) that kavod for a talmid chacham is like kavod for Hashem.  Therefore, it's a perfect middah kneged middah- hiddur/yira of a talmid chacham is like yira of Hashem, and the schar is ribbui of Yiras Shamayim.

Here is the Ran (Sanhedrin 19b DH

One thing is certainly true.  Rav Zeira fits into Rava's rule of With the Gaon in mind, there is more involved: I'm not sure whether standing for them fits more into  דדחיל רבנן הוו ליה  חתנוותא רבנן and he was zocheh to dveikus, and of course, there is no greater dveikus than learning Torah, or that by showing ahava he was zocheh to veshinantam, or just, as we said, he was showing hiddur and he was zocheh to Yirah and Yirah then brings to dveikus.

Medrash: Takum ve'hadarta is rewarded with Yiras shamayim.
Rava: Being mokir is rewarded with becoming a talmid chacham
Gaon: Ahavta is rewarded with veshinantam.
Gaon: Yira is rewarded with dveikus.
The מדה כנגד מדה is because, as Rabbeinu David says, k'vod talmid chacham is, al pi halacha, another form of k'vod shamayim.

Whichever schar follows from standing up for talmidei chachamim, it's fine to do it על מנת לקבל פרס, and Reb Zeira's words, ואקבל אגרא, are in character.

  1. I think saying "reward" is a misnomer. "מביאם לידי יראת שמים" is a statement of causality. If you practice yir'ah you get better at it. Would you call being a good musician "a reward" of practicing every day for hours?

After all, yir'as Shamayim cannot be given. הכל בידי שמים חוץ מיראת שמים would (to my mind) contradict your whole thesis.

    1. Thank you for your comment- I was wondering about that as well, and couldn't decide how to word it. The reason I chose "reward" was because hiddur zakein is not exactly Yiras Shamayim. But with the Rabbeinu David, you're right.
As for the חוץ מיראת שמי issue, the fact remains that we ask Hashem many times in tefilla to grant us exactly that, as seen in the story of Reb Meir/Bruria, and as the Maharsha indeed wonders. There are many answers, including the Chazon Ish and Reb Moshe, that asking for it in tefilla is not called בידי שמים because you initiated the process, or because you'll find yourself among a better chevra and your bad influences will move away. But the fact remains that there are plenty of ways around the חוץ problem.

    2. One of the dangers of being mevazeh AZ is that it's still practice in leitzanus. And soldiers require a special berakhah to remain ethical. According to some peshatim in the pasuq, so did Pinechas -- thus "הנני נותן לו את בריתי שלום".

For that matter, we show respect to something that the last time it was alive was a plant seed, and was since ground and baked, just to practice kavod.

      Middos spill over.

This may touch on a question I've played with for years. Why do we speak of Yir'as Shamayim as a synonym for Yir'as Hashem? If we mean the whole "Royal Court", aren't we dangerously close to AZ? And if we mean "[the One in] shamayim", then why do we never see the idiom "Ahavas Shamayim"? Similarly, who is being spoken of when we say "kelapei Shamaya galya"?

I am inclined to believe we mean "the One in heaven", and there is a reason why this kinui is more appropriate for Omniscience and yir'ah. I just don't know what. Yet.

But if it does include yir'ah for the entourage, the linkage to how we treat zeqeinim is stronger.

In any case, I think the practicing the middah thing works well enough either way.

    3. I did notice that neither the Medrash nor the Gaon say "schar," they say "yizkeh." Rabbeinu David is an extrapolation based on the hekesh. So I really should address the difference. Or maybe I'll just rely on people reading your comment and understanding that just as sin creates its own punishment- תמותת רשע רעה - so, too, mitzvos create their own "schar." Unlike the salary for a job, or a gift for a birthday, schar mitzva is, to some extent, a consequence.

    4. You might want to see http://www.aishdas.org/10YemeiTeshuvah.pdf#page=52 (pg 50 as numbered in the booklet) "The Gift of Justice". I discuss the origin of the dual view of sekhar-as-effect and sekhar-as-given-by-Gd being in that "Hashem is the both the One Who created the system of supernatural law that would cause any automatic sechar va’onesh, as well as the One Who would be imposing it personally. When he set up the law, Hashem did it cognizant of every outcome of it. The law would include knowledge of each instance, no less than if Hashem intervened at each instance. The difference is merely when the decision was made. And since Hashem has no time, no “when”, do they really differ?

    5. If, as you say, it is a machlokes between the sons of RYhG whether schar is intrinsic- an effect, or extrinsic- a reward, then why did you disagree with my use of the term schar where, as you say, it is more like exercise to build muscle, or practice to develop a skill?

    6. The question I raised in particular is whether you can call yir'as Shamayim a reward. Not reward vs effect, but effect of who -- has to be the person, not the Creator. Because bechirah is about yir'as Shamayim more directly than anything else.
